LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The Masterton Hospital authorities reported last night that Mr. J. Nicholls and Miss B. Winter, who were injured in a motor cycle smash on Friday night, were both making satisfactory progress.
Ten members of the Masterton Road Cycling Club took part in a 24-mile race on Saturday, the results being:— W. Pye (Imin.), 1; A. Bigg (Imin.), 2; M. Dooling (3min.), 3; B. Burns (5i min.), 4. Fastest time was returned by W. Page, 1 hour 7 minutes. Messrs George Alexander Monk, of Beikorangi and A. B. Sievwright, of Wellington, have been nominated for selection as National Federation candidate for Otaki. Mr. W. Appleton, of Wellington is to be invited to submit his name to a selection ballot.—(P.A.) At the luncheon of the Optimist Club last Tuesday, a motion was passed supporting the proposal of the Mount Holdsworth Club to have the eastern slopes of the mountain declared a scenic reserve. A motion expressing regret that such steps were necessary was also passed.
A meeting of the Kopuaranga Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Thursday last. Mrs. A. B. Cottle presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. Mrs. Campbell, Mt. Bruce, gave a demonstration of skin curing, which was greatly appreciated and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. A competition for the best' buttonhole was won by Mrs. E. J. Wright in the senior class and Miss L, Westhead in the junior class.
A beautiful carved oak altar in St. George’s Chapel, was dedicated at last night’s services at St. Matthew’s Church by the Vicar, the Rev. E. J. Rich. The altar was presented by a parishioner. Appropriate hymns were rendered at the dedication ceremony, which was most impressive. St. George’s Chapel was built partly as a war memorial and the furnishings are to be completed this year out of funds specially given for the purpose.
The story of a Mafeking flag was told at the South African War Veterans’ reunion on Saturday evening by Mr. E. 8. Smith, a member of the R.S.A. Mr. Smith stated that a Major Hepworth, to whom he was related, was Provost of Mafekingduring the historic siege and after the war was over sent to Lord Baden-Powell a flag that had flown at Mafeking throughout the siege. Major Hepworth had received a letter from Lord Baden-Powell thanking him for the flag.
As the nominations received do not exceed the number of vacancies, the following officers 1 of the Wairarapa Racing Club will automatically be reelected at the annual meeting on August 20. Patron, Mr. S. Cundy; president, Mr. Q. Donald; vice-presidents, Messrs H. Morison, T. Benton, and J. W. Card; hon. judge, Mr. C. J. Nix: hon. timekeeper, Mr. D. C. Collins; hon. veterinary surgeon, Mr. S. Fletcher; auditors, Messrs G. W. Sellar and L. H. Smart. As the nominations for the office of hon. treasurer, hon.- surgeons (three) exceed the number required a ballot will be taken.
