WAIRARAPA COMPETITION MATCHES. BRIGHT PLAY IN BEAUTIFUL WEATHER. GREYTOWN BEAT CARTERTON. The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s championship matches, which were continued on Saturday in fine, sunny weather, produced fast, bright play of an entertaining nature. Carterton. experienced their fifth defeat of the season when Greytown downed them 11-6 in the golden jubilee match. It was a first-class encounter. Martinborough’s winning way was checked •by Gladstone, who got home 13-8 in one of the brightest games of the second round. Old Boys and Red Star staged a hard-fought game at Memorial Park, the former prevailing 17-13. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Seniors. Grey town 11; Carterton 6. Gladstone 13; Martinborough 8. FINE FINISHING EFFORT. GREYTOWN OUTSTAY CARTERTON The fact that it marked the fiftieth year in which the two clubs have met in organised competition, lent additional interest to the Greytown-Car-terton encounter at the Carterton Showgrounds. Greytown came to light in the closing, stages of a fast and keenly contested game to score a good win 11-6. Both teams rose to the occasion and played fine football. At the start of the game Mr. A. L. Webster, of Greytown, led the Greytown fifteen on to the field and set the ball in motion. After the interval Mr. C. Reid, Carterton, led the Carterton team out and kicked oft. Messrs Reid and Webster, both played in the match in 1885. The crowd gave them a rousing reception. The Greytown backs showed up to better advantage in the early stages of the game, but quick spreading by the Carterton forwards had the effect of frustrating many promising movements. Both sets of forwards went well, the heavier Carterton pack appearing to hold a slight advantage. Play swept up and down field at a fast elip and neither side maintained a distinct territorial advantage for long. It was not until right on half-time that Hatton found a gap with a short punt and A. Steffert secured to cut across. L. Jensen missed the kick and Carterton led 3-6 at the interval. Within a few minutes of resumption Udy caught the Greytown defence napping and raced across for a good try. Jensen missed the kick. Fuller opened Greytown’s account with a penalty from half way. The more mobile Greytown team came into their own with about twenty minutes to go. Stringfellow scored a brilliant try for Fuller to convert and then Hiroti forced his way across for an unconverted try and Greytown led 11-6. The remaining few minutes were sternly contested but noside sounded with the scores unchanged. Mr. J. Fulton was the referee. FAST AND BRIGHT. GLADSTONE BEAT MARTINBOROUGH. Martinborough, who have had quite a run of successes of late, received a set-back when Gladstone beat them 13-8 in a particularly fast and interesting game. On the general run of play, Martinborough were a shade unlucky in having their colours lowered. Play was even in the opening spell but Martinborough had the better of the exchanges in the second session. The Gladstone backs were a force to be reckoned with 'but the Martinborough forwards played fine football. Within five minutes of the start of the game the score stood at 5-all. I. Booth scored for Gladstone from the first rush, McKay converting. Immediately afterwards P. Ward forced his way across for Martinborough and Martin converted. Fortunes fluctuated through-, out the spell and there was plenty of bright incident. Near'the close of the spell C. Coopei- capped a forward rush with a try. Himona converted and Gladstone held a 10-5 lead. -McKay increased Gladstone’s lead to 13-5 with a penalty but Martinborough made up some of the leeway when C. Ward scored an unconverted try. Martinborough were on top in the dying stages of a hard-fought game, but they failed to improve their position. Mr. H. J. McKenzie was the referee. FORTUNES FLUCTUATE. OLD BOYS SCORE NARROW WIN. After holding a 13-9 lead well on in the second spell Stars wilted in face of repeated Old Boy attacks and finally went under 17-13. Play was at times patchy but it was fast throughout and there was no lack of interest. The Star pack had the edge on their opponents but the Old Boys backs had more combination and made greater use of their opportunities than did the Star back-line. Polson opened Old Boys account with an unconverted try, but a penalty by Grantham and a try by Peterson, which Grantham converted put Stars 5 points in the lead. Old Boys, however, came to light just before the interval and Stroud and Buick scored tries to make the half-time score, Old Boys 9-8. R. Devine made a great run early in the second spell to send Peterson across. Grantham converted. Stars held Old Boys until well on in the spell when the latter put on two more tries in quick time. McCalmont scored the first, which Lang converted, and then Buick forced his way across. Mr. E. Miller was the referee.
