ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.

NOTES ON PLAY & PLAYERS. (By “Centre-Half.”) To-morrow the local representatives will meet one of Wellington's senior teams —Institute Old Boys. This team was defeated on Saturday last by Waterside but only after a very even game, so that our team will be fully extended to win. The institution of the fixture of the champion team playing a team selected from the other senior teams fully justified itself with last Saturday’s match. While Albion lost goals through poor shooting, the Rest also missed chances and played good football, especially when it is taken into account that many of the players were occupying unaccustomed positions. Dawson showed that he would make a capable forward with practice in that position, while the full-backs were very steady against a forward line which disappointed somewhat on what was expected of them. There was not the positional play and inter-passing that was expected from Albion, while the outside forwards tended towards offside play at times. The intermediate grade has sorted itself out and it is now apparent that Albion will be the winners. This team must be congratulated on its success and also on the way in which it has improved its style of play recently. Whatman Old Boys could only manage to draw with Masterton last week and this gives Albion a lead of three points which cannot be overtaken with one game to play. .

On Saturday a trial game will be played in order to sort out an Intermediate team which it is hoped will be sent to Wellington early in September. The boys deserve a trip away and have shown steady improvement during the season. Arrangements are now being completed for the sending away of the Primary Schools’ representatives to the New Plymouth at the end of the month. The boys have responded well to suggestions for helping themselves in financing the trip. The recent shop day was a success and thanks are expressed to all who assisted by their services or by donating goods. At the recent meeting of the Junior Advisory Committee expressions of thanks were made especially to Mesdames Watson, Cretney and Hubble and to Messrs Cretney, Watson, Weir and the organiser Mr. MeFeely. It is hoped that the Masterton public will be able to see our representative boys in their new uniforms before departing to the tournament.
