MISSING AIRMAN.
SEARCH IN RUAHTNE RANGES CONTINUES. HOPES OF SALVING ENGINE OF ’PLANE. HASTINGS, August 8. The search for Mr. Hamish Armstrong, the airman missing since July 21, was continued in the Ruahines today. The party which went out on Tuesday is still in the ranges, working up the Rangitikei River and Maropea Valley from the western side. Another party is working down the valley from where the ’plane was found and the two parties should meet te-mor-row or on Saturday. It is thought that if Mr. Armstrong had all his faculties and was not hurt when the 'plane landed he would have worked down the valley, following the river. A party including Mr. Brian Armstrong, a brother, of the missing airman, visited the 'plane to-day and dug away the snow around the machine in the hope of finding a trace of Mr. Armstrong. The snow in that part varies from four to twenty feet deep. Mr. Brian Armstrong hopes to salvage the engine of the 'plane immediately and a mechanic will go to the machine to-mor-row with a view to having the engine recovered. Three ’planes flew over the Maropea Valley to-day but discovered nothing. The men in the 'planes picked up the wrecked machine with difficulty. Visibility was the best for three weeks, to-day being a clear sunny day, with no wind or mist.—(P.A.)
