SENTENCE REDUCED.
NEW SOUTH WALES POISONING CASE. TEN YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT. SYDNEY, May 6. The Court of Criminal Appeal has reduced to ten years' imprisonment the sentence of penal servitude for life passed on Leslie Eldred Keene, aged 18 years for having attempted to cause poison to be taken by Cecil L. Urich, at Berry, with intent, to murder. (It was stated in evidence at Keene’s trial that Ulrich tasted his porridge at breakfast, and, after remarking that it had a bitter flavour, warned his family not to eat it. The porridge was given to two dogs, which died. From the dock Keene said he knew the poison was bitter and would be impossible to swallow. He only intended to frighten the Ulriches. The jury recommended that Keene be placed under observation. The Judge said that if any report were made which favoured Keene, it would be for the Governor and the Executive Council to take what action they thought fit, but he could not take other than a serious view of a man who was prepared to administer poison to three innocent persons and see them die in agony.)
