MEAT DISCUSSIONS.

MB. VERSCHAFFELT ADDED TO DELEGATION. PARTY LEAVING WELLINGTON TO-NIGHT. WELLINGTON, April 11. The Acting Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates), announced to-day that the Public Service Commissioner <(Mr. P. D. N. Verschaffelt) would accompany him to London to act as his assistant during the meat discussions. In making the announcement, Mr. Coates said there were many difficult problems to be faced at Home and he was anxious that he should have the advantage of an assistant possessing a legal mind. In addition to being a barrister and solicitor, Mr. Verschaffelt was a qualified accountant, and, in Mr. Coates’s opinion, would be a decided acquisition to the delegation. The other members of the delegation, which will leave Thorndon station to-morrow night to connect with the Rangitane in Auckland on Saturday, will be Mrs. Coates and the Minister’s personal secretary (Miss H. D. Montague). Mr. Coates also announced that during Mr. Verschaffelt’s absence abroad his position would be filled by Mr. A. D. Thomson, who on previous occasions has had charge of the office. Mr. T. Mark, at present secretary to the Commissioner, would act as Assistant Commissioner. Mr. Thomson was a Stipendiary Magistrate stationed at Palmerston North from 1903 to 1912. From 1913 to 1920 he held the office of Assistant Public Service Commissioner. He presided over the National Industrial Conference in 1927.—(P.A.)
