DENTAL CLINIC.
UNABLE TO MAKE BENT AL PAYMENT. REQUEST TO TRUST LANDS TRUST. The Masterton Dental Clinic advised the Trust Lands Trust, at its meeting last night, that it would not be able to make any payment on account of arrears of rent, £62 Bs, owing prior to March 31. The Clinic asked the Trust to consider making it a grant either by way of cash or rebate of rental. It was resolved to hold the matter over until the estimates meeting.
Observing that it was part of the function of the Trust to assist the Clinic, Mr. A. O. Jones moved that the Clinic’s rent for the past year be remitted. Members of the Clinic Committee and the various school committees were doing their best to raise sufficient funds to enable the very essential work of the Clinic to be maintained. Seconding the motion, Mr. J. Macfarlane Laing said that in all probability the Trust would be faced this year with the position of making very dose grants, provided of course, they Jwere able to make any grants. By making a grant to the Dental Clinic they would probably be doing the best for the children as all the schools in the district would benefit. It was questionable whether they would be able to jnake any free school books grant this year. That being so, he favoured assisting the Clinic. Mr. E. G. Eton was in favour of holding the matter over until the estimates meeting; .It was a serious tbjng for the Trust to remit rentals and it would be wiser, he thought, to make a cash grant and let the Clinic pay the rental out of that.
Mr. Jones said the Dental Clinic Committee would like to know where it stood.
"They are not being pushed for the rent,” observed Mr. Eton, who moved as an amendment that the matter be held, over until the estimates meeting. Mr. H. P. Hugo said he was not in favour of granting a rebate of rent as he was afraid there would be bad feeling over it. He considered that it would be better to defer the matter until the estimates meeting, when all applications for grants would receive the same treatment.
Mr. J. L. Hughes said he would do all he could to assist the Clinic but (though it would be better to deal with hll the applications for grants at the same time.
The chairman, Mr. T. F. Watson, pointed out that they had cut out all grants last year and while he personally wanted to help the Clinic he thought the matter could well be held over in the meantime. He considered that the Trust should make a straightout grant and let the Clinic pay the rent out of that.
On being put to the meeting the amendment was carried.
