LOCAL AND GENERAL.
A Presbyterian Church service will be held at Bideford on Sunday, March 10, at 2.30 p.m. At yesterday’s meeting of Masterton County Council Mr. W. I. Armstrong was appointed acting chairman of the Finance Committee in the absence of Councillor H. H. Mawley, who will be away for about 6 months on a trip abroad. In order that station 2ZD might be brought up to-date for the distribution of information to listeners outside the borough it was necessary to install a new speech microphone, stated Mr. W. D. Ansell in a letter to yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council in which he asked the council to consider the question of making a grant for that purpose. Owing to the state of its finances the council decided that it could not entertain the request. Reference was made at yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton County Council to the growing practice of car and lorry drivers passing mobs of sheep on bridges. One councillor stated that on his way to the meeting he saw two lorries trying to work through a mob of sheep on the Ruamahanga River Bridge. Councillors were of the opinion that the county by-law in this connection should be enforced. The byAaw provides that it is an offence for any person in charge of a/motor car or any other vehicle to drive on. to a bridge from the end towards which live stock are being driven until the stock have cleared the bridge. The Bed Star Football Club’s jubilee celebrations at Easter promise to be an outstanding event in football history in the Wairarapa. Old timers from various parts of the Dominion have signified their intention of being present, and a large contingent is coming up from Wellington. The Pirates Club from Napier will send down a strong team to play the Star seniors on Easter Saturday, while Masterton and Red Star juniors will provide the early game. The illustrated souvenir of the Red Star Club will shortly be on sale. This booklet gives the history of the club from its foundation in 1885 up till the present time. Radio enthusiasts are urged to attend the annual meeting of the Masterton Radio Listeners’ Club in the A. and P. Rooms to-morrow night at 8 o’clock as several important matters are coming up for discussion, including the provisions of the new bill now before Parliament, especially those dealing with B stations. It is pointed out that the existence of the local B station. depends on the functioning of the Radio Listeners’ Club, as it is only per medium of these clubs that subsidies are paid to B stations. It is therefore in the interests of radio listeners to give every support to the club.
