A HAPPY DAY.
CARTERTON SCHOOL PICNIC. EXCURSION TO PETONE. (“The Age" Special) About 380 children and 200 parents took advantage of the Carterton School picnic excursion yesterday to Petone. The train was scheduled to leave at 6.30 a.m. and from 5.30 onwards the picnickers began to assemble at the station. When the train arrived it was at once besieged and it soon became apparent that it would be a tight squeeze to fit everyone in. A party of six waved frantically at the crossing as the train went out and to their great relief the train stopped and picked them up. A Park Road lady sprinted and with a supreme effort just managed to get aboard. All were very happy and though the weather was dull and overeat it was not cold. The picnic was regarded as one of the most successful of its kind to be held. Swimming was indulged in and Uncle Toby was there with his donkeys, Colleen, Jinny, Belinda and Baby. There was a treasure hunt for free tickets which caused lots of fun. Among those present were Mr. A. T. White, retired headmaster and Mr. Fawcett the new headmaster. The success of the function was mainly due to an enthusiastic committee, the good behaviour of the children and the cooperation of the Railways Department.
