A reminder is given of the garden party to be held to-day at the grounds of Mr. and Mrs. Percy “Elmwood,” Upper Plain, by the Kaituna Women’s institute. There will be a full range of stalls and other attractions for all. The cost of admission will be 6d. All primary schools in Canterbury and Westland resume full-time teaching from Monday next. Herbert Berthelston, a middle-aged man, was convicted in the Police Conrt at Gisborne yesterday on three charges of committing theft by failing to account for moneys to the Public Works Department whilst custodian of plant and material at a railway camp. He was admitted to two years’ probation. -CP.A.) Following extensive inquiries, the police have establishhed the identity of the body of the man found in the Manawatu River in January as that of Edward Heading, a labourer, employed at the State Forest camp at Karioi, near Taihape. An inquest was held a few days after the discovery, but will not be reopened, as there is no fresh evidence as to how the deceased to be in the water. It is not known whether the deceased had relatives in New Zealand.—(P.A.) There will be many attractions at the garden party to be held at the beautiful grounds of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Borthwick, “Eridge,” Titoki Street, to-day by the St. Matthew’s Ladies’ Guild. Besides the many stalls there will be dirinks, fruit salad and afternoon tea available for patrons while hoop-la, tennis, croquet, clock golf and side shows will cater for their amusement. Free cars will leave the Post Office at 2.30, 2.45, and 3.0 p.m. The price of admission is 6d, children 3d. It was 26 years on Thursday since the regular North Island Main Trunk railway was commenced by the departure of the first through passenger train from Auckland for Wellington. Actually the railway had been used prior to that date. Some months before, on August 3, 1908, the two railheads had been brought together at Manganui-o-te-ao, about halfway between the two termini. Four days later a special train, conveying a Parliamentary party, came to Auckland from Wellington to participate in the welcome to the visiting American Fleet, the train returning on August 17. The music will be supplied by Minifie’s Gaiety Orchestra and a ’bus leaves P.O. at 7.30 p.m. ■A Cafeteria is to be opened on Tuesday next in premises next to the U.F.S. Dispensary, Queen Street. Most people prefer to choose food to suit their own taste and by visiting the Cafeteria they can make their choice of sand wiches, scones, cakes, etc., and pay only for what they eat. Everything is to be home-made and light lunch can also be obtained.
