The Salvation Army Band will play nt the Masterton Hospital to-morrow at 2.30 p.m. The Church of England Sunday School and Bible Classes will resume for the year to-morrow. St. Matthew’s Sunday School will begin at 10 a.m., Lansdowne Sunday School at 9.30 a.m., Upper Plain at 2 p.m. and Kuripuni at 2.30 p.m. The Department of Agriculture notifies that the inspection of sheep at saleyards will commence as from February 25, and vendors will consequently be well advised to see that their sheep are thoroughly dipped; before yarding.
The Lansdowne Presbyterian Church Ladies’ Guild will hold a shop day on i Wednesday, February 13, starting at 10.30 a.m., in Goodwin’s Auction Mart, Queen Street. Gifts will be collected on advice being given by ringing ’phone 2424. While crossing the railway line at Waikanae yesterday morning a cream lorry, driven by Ralph Thomson, was struck by the Auckland express. Thomson was thrown out, and was picked up unconscious with head and hand injuries. He is making good progress. — (P.A.) Referring to the Magisterial decision classing Balzac’s "Droll Stories” as indecent, Professor Thompson, of Otago University, said that the statement by the defence that the work was necessary for students was nonsense. Balzac wrote nearly a hundred novels, all nearly first class, and students had plenty of scope without opening the •'Contes Drolatiques, ” which he agreed catered for the lascivious mind. -(P.A.) "He has done wonderful work for the association and is deserving of our very best thanks,” observed the president, Mr. W. F. McLaren, when referring at last night’s meeting of the Masterton A. and P. Association, to the fact that the secretary, Mr. R. H. Williams, had secured over 100 new members since last July. Other members also referred to the splendid results achieved by Mr. Williams, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks by acclamation. Included among the junior members elected last night was a lad of four years.
Before leaving for Australia, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, Postmaster-Gen-
eral, released the following statement regarding the proposed amendments to the Broadcasting Act: It is proposed to amend the Act by enlarging the board from three to seven members. With a board of seven an advisorycouncil will be unnecessary. The present regulations regarding controversial matters will be withdrawn and discretion in this matter left to the judgment of the board. Broadcasting in New Zealand will therefore be under the control of the board except such matters as licensing and wave lengths, 'which necessarily must be retained by *the Government.—(JP.A.) Following a decision made at the annual meeting last July of the Royal Agricultural Society that the Royal Show should be held once in every five years in each of five districts in the Dominion, a meeting was held at Feilding at which a western district council was set up, consisting of Messrs D. Collis, J. Batchelar, and H. Kissiing (Palmerston North), J. Webb (Taihape), M. A. Conway and J. Knight ([Feilding), H. B. Johnston and R. Marshall (Marton), R. O. Dalrymple (Bulls), H. J. Lancaster (Levin), A. Hunter (Hawera), H. C. Hampson (New Plymouth). The district comprises Taranaki and Manawatu and down to Wellington on the west coast. Mr. L. J. Wild, president of the Royal Society, presided. The following members were elected to the Royal Society council: Messrs Knight, Conway, Hunter, Batchelar, and Sampson.—(P.A.)
During the last few weeks the Masterton Wesley Church has been in the hands of the renovators, and various repairs and improvements have been carried out. The old windows have been replaced by new lattice ones, the ,seats have all been remodelled, and the interior of the church has beeA repainted. The building is now light and airy and will be greatly appreciated by the worshippers. The services to-mor-row will be in the nature of a Thanksgiving. There will be special singing both morning and evening. At the morning service the Junior Choir will sing two anthems, and at night besides Jackson’s "Te Deum,” the choir will sing the "Gloria” by Mozart and "The Strain Upraise of Joy and Praise” by Lampson. Miss Olive Fish will also sing. The Bev. G. F. Stockwell will conduct both services, and will also preach at Rangitumau in the afternoon. The Rev. V. R. Jamieson will preach at both services at Kuripuni, and Mr. Briant will conduct the Solway service at 7 p.m.
