BANDIT EXPLOIT

SENSATIONAL ROBBERY NEAR CONEY ISLAND. BIG SUM LIFTED FROM ARMOURED LOBBY. THIEVES BREAK THROUGH POLICE CORDON. (Received Wednesday, 7 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 21. Fifteen bandits armed with submachine guns and automatics this afternoon looted an armoured lorry of 427,000 dollars cash and escaped through a cordon of police, who, when the alarm was given, surrounded the entire Borougu of Brooklyn. In a quiet street near the Coney Island amusement resort, the lorry halted to make one of its numerous collections of cash for deposit in a bank. The guards took no notice of a group of nondescript loungers, but at a signal from one of the bandits the robbery started and was completed within three minutes. A tattered pedlar, who had been pushing a cart in the vicinity, suddenly ripped the cover from his vehicle and trained three submachine guns on the guards. Three high-powered automobiles appeared a few seconds later. lite bandits collected the money and sped away. The guards pursued them, firing a machine gun at the bandits’ automobiles, which disappeared in crowded traffic. Within a.n hour, one of the automobiles was found near Coney Island Beach. It was reported that men had been seen bundling sacks into a fast motor launch. The police believe the bandits used this method of escape. Police launches and aeroplanes are conducting a wide search. •
