BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. BOOKS FOR THE REFERENCE LIBRARY. The Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, presided at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, held last night. Others present were Councillors C. H. Anderson, J. B. Barr, R. Russell, H. M. Peacock, W. L. Free, W. Kemp, W. H. Judd, A. D. Low. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Trevor Beetham and H. J. O’Leary. An application by the Girl Glides Association for the free use of the Social Hall for the purpose of holding a children’s party was granted. The use of the Social Hall by the Borough Staff for its dance was also granted rent free. The rent of the Lecture Room incurred by the W.E.A. for a special meeting was written off. It was decided to thank Messrs Duncan and Davies for their donation to the Park of a quantity of olearias. An application from Mr. P. Ryan for the transfer of a butchers’ licence from Morris Bros, to himself was granted. . With reference to the James Clarke Alpass bequest it was decided to write Jto the Wellington librarian, Mr. Norrie, and to the Principals of the Wairarapa High School and the Masterton Technical School advising them of the amount the council had to spend in the purchase of books for the reference library and asking that they submit a list of what they consider would be suitable books for the reference library. Councillor Free, chairman of the Library Committee, said that the committee would be .pleased to receive suggestions as to suitable books from any anember of the public. A further application was received from the Wairarapa Vulcanising Co., for permission to erect a kerbside pump outside their premises in Jackson Street. The application was not granted and it was decided that, in all cases where the council had granted permission for the erection of kerbside pumps and the applicants had not availed themselves of the permit, the permission be revoked. The Masterton County Council forwarded an estimate of the cost of the maintenance of boundary roads for 1934-35. The county is to be thanked for its letter and advised that the estimate is acceptable to the council.
