The following announcement has been received from His Excellency, the ‘ Governor-General:— “His Majesty the King has approve,! of the appointment of the following as members of the staff Of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester, during his forthcoming visits to Australia and New Zealand: Major-General R. G. H. Howard-Vyse, C.M.G., D. 5.0., Chief of Staff; Captain Arthur Curtis, C.MG., C.V.O.M.C Private Secretary; Captain Howard Kerr M.V.0., 0.8. E., and Lieutenant Derek Schrieber, equerries.—(P.A.)
Mr. V. Graham, Eketahuna, left last week by the Marama on a visit to his uncle, the Rev. Graham, Adelaide. The Rev. R. H. Catherwood and family, of Carterton, left yesterday morning for Wanganui, where they will in future reside.
Mrs. Barrer, Senr., a very old coionist, and mother of M>*. T. R. Barrer chairman of the Wellington Harboiw Board, is lying in a critical condition at her home at Te Wharau. She is 94 years of age.
A well-known vocal soloist, Miss Olive N. Fish, of Napier, is .taking up her residence in Masterton. She took an active part in the foundation of the Napier branch of the British Music Society.
A motion of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. Robert Rigg was passed at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council. The late Mr. Rigg held office on the council for a period in 1919.
Mr. Terence Franks, who has been on the staff of the Masterton Post Office for the past six years, has been transferred to the Weber Post Office. Mr. Franks commenced duty last Monday.
Reference was made by the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council to the fact that Mr. Charles Dixon, one of Masterton’s oldest residents, would celebrate his 88th birthday to-day. It was resolved to forward a letter of congratulation to Mr. Dixon from the council.
The funeral of the late Mr. F. St.Gd Palmer, a well-known and highly respected resident of Kopuaranga took place at Masterton yesterday, there being a representative attendance of district settlers and others to pay their last respects. The Rev. E. J. Rich conducted a service at St. Matthew’s Church and also officiated at the graveside. A number of beautiful wreaths bore witness to the esteem in which the late Mr. Palmer was held.
