MOUNTAIN TRAGEDY‘S
GERMAN PARTY OVERTAKEN BY BUZZARD. DISASTER IN THE HIMALAYS. SEVERAL DEAD OR MISSING. (Received Tuesday, 9.15 p.m.) CALCUTTA, July 17. Nanga Parbat, known to the hill tribes as the “Naked Lady,” one of the giants of the Western Himalayas, it is feared, has claimed several victims in a German mountaineering expedition, says the ° Calcutta Statesman.” Merkl, the leader, Wieland, Welzenbaeh, Bernard, Muellritter, Asckunbrunner and Schneider, with several Indian porters are missing. Two porters died in a terrible blizzard raging in the mountains for several days. News has just been received from Astor, Kashmir State, that on July 8 the climbers had reached 23,000 feet, almost the summit, when they encounteredl a blizzard and snow clouds miles long. They were blown off the m,ountain top and the tents and sleeping bags were carried away. The climbers hastily descended to lower altitudes two porters dying on the way. It is feared that Merkil, Wieland, and. Welzenback and several porters perished in snowstorms at the camp. Seven others, four Germans, with porters, left immediately to attempt a rescue, but thereafter they also have not been heard of and fears are entertained for their safety.
