BRIGHT RUGBY.
WAIRARAPA HIGH SCHOOL BEAT PALMERSTON. FINE CONTEST YESTERDAY. GOOD STANDARD SET BY BOTH TEAMS. Superior combination and tusnore determinedly enterprising use of their, opportunities, enabled, the Wairarapa High School first fifteen to score a meritorious victory over the- Palmerston North High School representatives, in a match played in Masterton yesterday. The Moascan Clip holders went under;-. 12/3. The match was brimful of bright, eventful incident, and, takiag account of the unfavourable ■ conditions of sodden ground and, greasy ball; pl®y touched a high standard throughout. Played at peak pace all the- way, the game upheld the best traditions of secondary school Bugby and the numerous spectators were well pleased with th». displays of both teams. Wairarapa came through a strenuous encounter with fljing colours. Their -backs combitted well, while their forwards showed admirable co-ordination in Both attack and' defence. It was this' fine teamwork that earned for the 'Wairarapa ladt victory over a side wlntae principal strength lay in the work of severalbrilliant individualists.
Whirarapa secured more- than a fairahare of the ball from the-set scrums iff ■the first spell and their banks frequently got under way in swift, piercing rushes, the links in the eiiain handling ‘the greasy ball with surprising aeounacy. The visiting rtaek-line also flushed into action but, stated,' thby lucked the cohesion that-- marked Whirarapa's display. The tackling of both 'sides was suddfen and effective, and many a promising movement came to nought as the result of jfeadly tackling. Wairarapa had the visitors penned 1 in their own territory fon-a great part of the second spell, bub- Palmerston, defended] well. Possession from- the scrums and line-outs was about'fiftyfifty. The duel between two splendid, and seemingly tireldss packs of forwards, varied by occasional bright flashes of back play, was weH worth seeing.
In the opening part of the first spell play swept into Wairarapa territory, but the advantage-.was short-lived, and the home team soen drove into the visitors’ 25, where Eastwood' followed up a short kick:to score tho opening try. O’Callaghan failed to> convert. Shortly afterwards, Stucky equalised the score with » penalty goal. Wairarapa, however, were not to be denied, and again took the lead, O’Callaghan finding the uprights witk a penalty. Near the close of the first- spell Peterson further increased Wairarapa ’s tally with an uncenverted try. There wan no further score at- the- interval. The only score ia the second' spell was a splendid try by Dewbee, which O’Callaghan failed' to convert. Mr. F. Itean was the referee.
