Gangsters terrorised two sections of Manliattans East Side in gun battles with the police, in which one policeman was killed and two were gravely injured. Three children, ineluding a ten months’ old baby, wore painfully injured. Four gunmen, while making their escape after a store robbery, were questioned on suspicion by a policeman. Without warning, all the gunmen started shooting and killed the policeman instantly. They then insanely continued firing, injuring children. Two other policemen were shot at without warning when questioning suspicious characters in the other section. So many officers have been victims of such attacks that the Mayor of New York, Major La Gardia, has issued * blanket order to the police: “Shoot first and shoqt to kill.”
