ASSAM TORNADO
HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE DEAD & INJURED. REPORTS OF APPALLING HAVOC. FEARS OF HEAVY LOSSES IN REMOTE AREAS. (Received Sunday, 6.30 p.m.) CALCUTTA, May 5. Details have reached here of appalling havoc caused by the tornado in the Sulhet .district of Assam on April 30. Thus far, over ftvfco hundred are reported dead, several hundreds missing and five hundred injured. Scores of villages wtire destroyed and thousands of inhaJbitants 9 are homeless." It is feared that the death roll will be much heavier in remote districts, as scores of human bodies and those of animals are floating daily down the river Surma, where many fishing fleets and ferry boats were overwhelmed. Relief parties have been sent to the affected areas.
