FATALITY AT ALFREDTON.

SAWMILL PROPRIETOR KILLED. A distressing fatality occurred at Alfredton on Saturday at the sawmill owned by Messrs Rutherford and Nordloff. The victim was Mr. Roy Nordloff, one of the partners in the firm.

The accident occurred at about 2 p.m. Mr. Nordloff was about to drive to Pahiatua with his wife and family, ."whom he left sitting in his car while he went into the mill to attend to some item of business. He was wearing an overcoat and by some means this was caught on a piece of shafting in motion. Mr. Nordloff was swung round with such violence that it is supposed that he must have been killed instantly. All his clothes were torn off and his body was terribly injured. Men working in the mill stopped the engine as quickly as possible, but there was no chance to do this in time to save Mr. Nordloff’s life. Dr. Grace was summoned from Eketahuna, but could only certify to the death of the victim.

A middle aged man, the late Mr. Nordloff was born at Norsewood, his parents being pioneer settlers in that area, and had lived in the Ihuraua and Alfredton districts for the past twenty; five years or more. His widow was, prior to her marriage, a Miss Halberg, a member of a well-known Ihuraua family. Mr. Nordloff was a highly respected and popular citizen, who had taken an active part in various district affairs. As the representative of a pioneer family, he drove a bullock wagon in the procession organised at i the celebration qf the Eketahuna jubilee. Mr. Nordloff was a member of the Methodist Church and of the Foresters’ Lodge. He is survived by his widow .and five- children, to whom deep sympathy will be offered in their tragic bereavement. An inquest is to be held at Alfredton to-day, at 10 a.m. and the funeral of the latq Mr. Nordloff will leave his late residence, to-day at 2 p.m. for the Alfredton Cemetery.
