In a statement issued yesterday, the Minister of Defence (Mr. Cobbe) said that the first batch of new enlistments in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, under the Government’s recently announced intention to provide an increased air defence, were requested to report at Hobsonville on Thursday in order to commence their training in preparation for the arrival of the service aircraft due approximately about the middle of this year. These men, the Minister stated, represent the first selection from a large list of applications received. Two other drafts will be selected during the year from the waiting list, and these will receive their initial disciplinary training at the Trentham military camp. The first flight of bomber aircraft is to be stationed at Hobsonville and the second at the Wigram Aerodrome, Christchurch. The personnel being enlisted this year are to man these two flights and to allow for a proportional increase in the workshop personnel of both stations.—'(P.A.)
