TELEGRAPH RATES.
PROTEST AGAINST NEW CHARGES. BUSINESS COSTS INCREASED. CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. The telegraphic bills of several Christchurch business houses have increased since the new scale of charges was introduced by 10 to 15 per cent. This statement was madejand widely supported at a meeting or the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to-night. In discussion, the action of the Government in imposing the extra rate was criticised severely, several speakers describing it as merely a device to obtain piore revenue. The suggestion made was that business firms would not pay this extra tax and would bo obliged to make less use of the telegraph service, so that the Department might actually lose revenue. AU agreed, however, that the new rates involved an increased eost to business houses to whom .the lower rates for shorter distances were of little value. It was decided o send a telegram of protest to the Minister and also to ask the Postmaster-General to make public the revenue derived from telegrams last year and also to publish an estimate of the sum which would have been received if the present charges were in force.—‘(P.A.)
