JUNIOR JUDGES.

APPOINTMENT BY A. & P. SOCIETIES. MASTERTON FAVOURS PROPOSAL The question of appointing junior judges to act in conceit with the senior judges at shows was briefly discussed at yesterday’s meeting of the Masterton A. & P. Association, the majority of members favouring such a proposal. The matter was raised by a letter from the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association stressing the necessity for educating junior judges. Mr. G. H. Perry supported the proposal, observing: that it would be an excellent method of educating young judges, who in time would ibe capable of stepping into the senior judges’ shoes. The chairman, Mr. Adam McKay,, said that at most shows the stewards wore keen young men who would one day be judges. Mr. Perry said that the boys in the agricultural class at the Wairarapa High School were making a very good job of judging at shows and demonstrations. The association of young judges with the elder ones would prove invaluable and they would be aide to get a good idea of the method and other details of judging. It was one thing to judge six or seven sheep and another to judge 20 or 30.

Mr. McKay said that the High School boys had visited his place recently and he had been very agreeably surprised (ft their knowledge of stock He had been quite taken back by several of the points they had noted. The boys were doing excellent work at the High School, where they had a keen and enthusiastic instructor. Many of the boys, he added, could “read” a sheep very well indeed. A member pointed out that at present younger judges had no opportunity of learning the various methods and details in connection with the judging of show stock.

On the motion of Mr. Perry,- it was decided to send a remit to the North Island conference of A. and P. Associations urging that where possible the various societies appoint junior judges to act in association with the senior judges. Mr. Perry pointed out that such a move need not incur any additional expense to the societies as men from the societies’ own districts could be appointed.
