COMPENSATION CLAIM.
YOUTH’S SUCCESSFUL ACTION.
CHRISTCHURCH, March 9. A claim for compensation for injuries sustained by strain when lifting a heavy sack of peanuts was made in the Arbitration Court to-day by William Wilson, a storeman’s assistant, against Self Help Co-operative Ltd. Plaintiff was 18 years of age. After the strain on November 26, 1932, plaintiff had been in bed three weeks and away from work until March 21, 1933, when he was able to return to light work. He was paid compensation while off duty. On May 27, 1933, he was discharged by defendant company and had been unable to obtain employment since. At the timo of the accident his wages were 27s 6d weekly. Giving judgment for plaintiff His .Honour said one -could not hold it against the boy if he moved an article, while sweeping out the shop. There was evidence that plaintiff had been prohibited from doing heavy work but that would not come within the general prohibition. Fifteen shillings weekly would be the limit of plaintiff’s earning power and he would be entitled to compensation at two-thirds of the difference between 15s weekly and the average weekly earnings from May 27 to date and a further six weeks.— (P.A.)
