EMPIRE MIGRATION

DEVELOPMENT OF EMPTY w LANDS. TOLL INVESTIGATION URGED. DEBATE IN HOUSE OF COMMONS. (Received Thursday, 7 p.m.) LONDON, February 28. In the House of Commons Mr. T. Levy moved a motion welcoming the Departmental Committee on migration and urging the early issue of the report. Commissions should be appointed to inquire on the spot the possibilities in the Dominions and Colonies. They should consist not of politicians, but of farmers, surveyors, and financiers to study the task of developing the rich, empty lands of the Empire. It was imperative to safeguard the Imperial future. Mr. A. M. Lyons, seconding the motion, said the proportion of British dock in Canada was shrinking, while many jealous eyes were on Northern Australia. One of the causes of the lag in migration was the lack of social jerviees in the Dominions. Mr. W. Lunn said the danger of so many debates on the subject was the •reation of a false impression in the dominions that the House of Commons vas in a panic to shovel people on to he Dominions. The motion was carried without a li vision.
