No bankruptcies were registered in Masterton during February. For the corresponding month last year one petition was filed.

The C grade tennis mateh between St. Patrick’s and Kopuaranga which was to have taken place to-morrow has been postponed till' later in the season.

In a match for the Mutrie Cup, played on Wednesday afternoon, the holders, G. Stewart and E. Reid (s) of the Masterton Bowling Club defeated Butler and Kilgour (s), Park, 25/16. The following additional donations to the Wairarapa Cricket Association’s Easter Tour Fund are acknowledged:— Previously acknowledged, £5 8s; E. 8.8., ss; L. Matthews, 2s 6d; J. E. Jenkins, ss; W. J. Fly, ss. ■ The following are the vital statistics registered in Masterton for the month of February, the figures for the corresponding month last year being given in parentheses:—Births, 12 (27); deaths, 17 (8); marriages, 8 (7). During February the Masterton County Council issued 14 motor drivers’ licenses, bringing the total to date to 1041. For the same period the Masterton Borough Council issued 20 drivers’ licenses, making the total for the licensing year to date, 1645. C. E. Malfroy, who, with E. D. Andrews and A. C. Stedman, is to represent New Zealand in forthcoming Davis Cup contests, will leave for England by the Ruahine on March 10. The New Zealand team is to meet Czechoslovakia in a European zone match before the end of June.

The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. J. A. Young) announced yesterday the allocation of the Golden Chance art union proceeds as follows:— Relief of distress throughout the Dominion, £5000; Free Kindergarten Union of New Zealand (to be made available to Kindergarten Associations), £5000; Wellington Children’s Health Camp Association, £250; Waikato Children’s Camp League, £250; total distribution, £16,500. —(P.A.) The Hon. R. Masters has telegraphed to Messrs H. S. S. Kyle and B. W. Hawke, M.’sP., concerning representations made to him in Christchurch by onion growers. Mr. Masters states that the Government has agreed to guarantee the growers an average gross return for onions shipped to Canada of £7 a ton, with a maximum of 1000 tons and the maximum amount to be payable by the Government to be £3 a ton.— (P.A.) On arrival of the Wellington-Mas-terton mail train at the Masterton Railway Station on Wednesday night at 7.50 o’clock, James 'Shannon, 54 years of age, was arrested on charges of drunkenness and with having failed to pay his rail fare between Carterton and Masterton. Shannon appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Messrs J. Caselberg and A. Rip(pon, Justices of the Peace. He was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs of Bs 6d for having travelled on the train without having paid his fare and convicted and discharged on the charge of .firunkenness.

The redistribution of hotel licences in view of possible increased tourist traffic was the subject of a report of its joint tourist and publicity committee to the Christchurch Chamber of Commerce last night. The committee recommended and the Chamber agreed, that the Government be asked to set up .a special committee, or call a conference, to examine all matter relating to the provision of facilities and amenities for tourists, particularly hotel accommodation and a proper distribution of licences, the committee to sit under the chairmanship of the Minister of Tourist Resorts and to consist of representatives of the New Zealand Alliance, the Licensed Victuallers, the Health Department, shipping, railway and transport interests.—(P.A.)
