PERSONAL.

Sir George Clerk, British Ambassador at Brussels, has been appointed British Ambassador at Paris in the place of Lord Tyrrell, who is retiring, a cablegram states.

Mr. J. F. Thurston, Cole Street, who has been a patient in the Masterton Hospital for the past seven months with a broken leg, the result of a football accident, had made sufficient progress to return to his home yesterday.

In view of the approaching marriage of Miss Burcher, the St. John Ambulance (Nursing Association) last Thursday presented her with a small token of appreciation after her four years ’ service as secretary.

The death is announced of Mr. John McGraw, famous manager for thirty years of the New York Giants baseball team. He died of uremic poisoning, after ten days’ illness, aged sixty-one, states a cablegram from New York.

The death occurred at Auckland on Tuesday of last week of Mrs. Toomath, wife of Mr. James Toomath, of Auckland, and formerly of Masterton. The late Mrs, Toomath was highly respected for her many personal qualities, and her death will be deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends. The funeral took place at Auckland on Thursday last. Mr. and Mrs. Toomath celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding a few weeks ago. The death occurred yesterday afternoon of Mrs. Fanny Whitt, a very old and highly respected Masterton resident. The late Mrs. Whitt, whose husband predeceased her some years ago, had been in ill-health for some time. She is survived by a grown-up family, to whom the sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended in their sad bereavement. The funeral will take place to-morrow, leaving the residence, Church Street, at 11 a.m. for the Masterton Cemetery.
