BOXING.

HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE BOUT AT INVERCARGILL. HOLDER WINS ON POINTS. INVERCARGILL, February 26. In a bout for the heavyweight boxing championship of New Zealand here this evening Ray Nicol (12st. 71bs.) of Ohai, holder, defeated George Singleton (13st. 121b5.) of Invercargill on points. A crowded house witnessed a good even contest and there must have been very little between the pair at the finish, the display of boxing being up to championship standard. A preliminary between W. Billish (list. 51bs.) of Wellington and F. Prendergast (11 st. lllbs.) of Invercargill was won by Billish on a foul in the third round, after the winner was down for counts of eight, seven, and eight in the first two rounds.—(P.A.) OXLEY DEFEATED. BOUT WITH AUSTRALIAN. WELLINGTON, February 26. In a professional lightweight boxing contest at the Town Hall to-night Jack Fitzgerald (Australia) defeated Ted Oxley (New Zealand). Oxley weighed 9st. 611b5., giving away half a pound and was not on the top of his form, appearing to lack confidence. Fitzgerald’s fast left and brilliant defence puzzled his opponent, who lagged behind in points throughout the fifteen rounds. —(P.A.)
