UNEMPLOYED TEACHERS.
NO EXPLOITATION OF POSITION. MINISTERIAL ASSURANCE. CHRISTCHURCH, February 26. A denial of the assertion that the Education Department was taking advantage of the number of unemployed teachers to exploit those in permanent positions was given to-day by the Minister of Education, the Hon. B. Masters in an address at the opening of a new intermediate school. Mr. Masters said the Department had had a very serious time with teachers and was faced last year with a total of 1,800 out of employment. Although the Department had no legal responsibility it felt that it had a moral responsibility to those men and women who had been trained in its institutions. Mr. Masters said he had therefore secured the co-operation of the Minister of Employment and he was glad to say that to-day all those teachers were employed except in Christchurch, where there had recently been adverse criticism. He had had nothing but approbation for the scheme. He had had personal thanks from many of the rationed teachers. The GovernAnent had not been taking advantage of rationed teachers to supplant teachers i.i permanent positions.—(P.A.)
