TRAINING TEACHERS.
VALUE OF THE PROBATIONBR SYSTEM. REPRESENTATIONS TO MINISTER. CHRISTCHURCH, February 26. The Minister of Education (the Hon. R. Masters, met members of the Education Board at an informal conference to-day.. Mr. R. Wild spoke of the resumption of the training of teachers with special reference to the probationer system. He thought all boards were unanimous that the probationer system should' not be abandoned, as it was a necessary part of the teacher’s training. It would be necessary in about two years; to resume the training of teachers, and if the Department would authorise boards to employ probationers they would secure the cream of-'those-who- were offering. The Minister said no decision had been reached regarding the probationer but it had been discussed by Cabinet'. In. England the probationer system was going out gradually, and students were l going straight into train>mg college. If that conclusion were arrived at in New Zealand it would not be done for financial reasons, but for other considerations.—(P.A.)
