FLOODS SUBSIDE.

POSITION IN HAWKE’S BAY. EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE. NAPIER, February 14. The flood waters are receding, the weather is fine, and no further damage is expected. The lake which formed at Meeanee as a result of the river bank breaking will take some days, if not weeks, to drain. The damage in that area is extensive. THE ABANDONED CAMP. WAIPUKURAU, Feb. 14. Tending to show that the evacuation of the military camp by the Second Infantry Brigade was justified in view of the- weather conditions, it is noteworthy that following a lull after the Territorials left yesterday, a further heavy downpour occurred last night, totalling 1.46 in. The training course for officers has been stopped, and some 40 leave for their home centres to-day. —(P.A.) (A message received in Wellington yesterday by the Minister of Defence (the Hon. j. G. Cobbe) from Colonel W. H. Cunningham, D. 5.0., in charge of the camp, stated that it had been decided to elose the camp altogether, and that the Headquarters staff officers, who had yesterday, in spite of the weather conditions, expressed a desire to remain in camp to complete their allotted course, had now been forced to leave the camp.) TREMENDOUS DOWNPOUR. ON RANGITAIKI PLAINS. WHAKATANE, February 14. The heaviest rainfall since the commencement of the taking of records fourteen years ago has been experienced during the past seven days a total of 18in being recorded on the Bangitaiki Plains and 14.49 in in the borough. The rivers are running bank <high, but no flooding has occurred. The M-proaehes to a small, bridge on the Whakatane-Rotorua highway were washed out and slips occurred on several other roads, but all traffic has been maintained.—(P.A.)
