FIVE INJURED.

LORRY UPSET NEAR LINTON. CONDITION OF TWO MEN SERIOUS. PALMERSTON N., Feb-. 13. Running into a bad patch of loose metal as it was travelling with the added momentum of a downhill spurt, a fully-laden three-ton lorry skidded and capsized on the main. road, a few miles south of Linton last evening, with the result that the driver and four passengers received injuries requiring removal to hospital. A party of side showmen, they were travelling northwards from Levin, the truck conoveying also a considerable quantity of side-show equipment, which included a partially disman tied “ chairoplane ’ ’ and its engine, which they were taking to the Dannevirke Show. Those admitted to hospital were: Harry Thornton, aged 52, of Napier; Frank Welfare, aged 29, of Napier; William Whittaker, aged 54, of Napier; George Ward, aged 31, of Wellington; Harry Crabtree, aged 43, of Napier.

Thornton and. another man riding in the cab received the worst injury, their companions escaping more lightly. The equipment also suffered extensively, although the engine was salvaged in good condition. The woodwork of the lorry was badly smashed. Thornton’s skull was fractured, and his injuries are serious. Ward suffered a fractured arm and ribs, and his condition is serious. Welfare, who suffered abrasians, was discharged from hospital to-day, and Whittaker and Crabtree suffered abrasions.
