BURIAL AT SEA.
UNUSUAL EVENT IN POVERTY BAY. GISBORNE, February 12. An unusual incident, a burial at sea, took place in Poverty Bay this afternoon. Mr. William Douglas Bruce, one of the best known residents of the town died on Saturday, and by his expressed desire, his remains were to be buried at sea. Mr. Bruce was a member of the Church of Christ Scientist and after a funeral service had been conducted by a lady member of the church at the deceased’s late residence, the remains were removed; to a launch, which proceeded to some three miles off shore. The engines were then stopped. Tennyson’s “Crossing the Bar” Was recited and the shell was consigned to the deep.—(P.A.)
