OBITUARY.

- MR. DANIEL G. RIDDIFORD.

News has been received of the death on Sunday at his residence, "View Halloa," Marton, of Mr. Daniel George Riddiford, the well-known pastoralist, in his 75th year. The late Mr. Riddiford was a son of Mr. Daniel Riddiford, who came from Yorkshire, England, and was born at Lower Hutt in 1859. Educated at Uppingham Public School, in the Old Country, Mr. Riddiford. returned to New Zealand in 1878, and spent several years on his father's station, Te Awaiti, on the East Coast, about 30 miles from Martinborough. He subsequently acquired the Burnside station on the main road from Stanway to Haleombe. For many years Jie was a member of the council of the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He PoLf "Burnside" and bought a place cutsidp of Taihaf e called Mokau. He had lived at • 4 View Halloa," near Marton, for many years. In hunting and polo l circles, Mr. Riddiford's name was well known, he having been Master of the Rangitikei Hounds for forty-nine years. As captain of the Rangitikei Polo Club he had a good sporting record, having skippered the club in 1894 when they won the Saville Cup, and again in 1885 when tlVy were the winners of the Allround Challenge Cup. In addition, he was president of the New Zealand Hunt Clubs’ Association, and was devoted to sport of every description. He formerly owned some first-class weightcarrying hacks, hunters, and steeplechasers, and won numerous prizes at the various agricultural and pastoral association shows in Hawke's Bay, Wasrarapa, Manawatu, Wanganui, and the West Coast, especially in the jumping and weight-carrying classes. He was a good shot and angler, and was a steward of the Marton Jockey Club.

The late Mr. Riddiford was twice married. His first wife was a daughter of the late Mr. Kelham, of Lower Hutt. There was one daughter, who now resides in England. His second wife was Miss J. Glennie, a daughter of the late Mr. John Glennie, of New South Wales. Mr. Donovan Riddiford is a son. Messrs Vivian, Daniel, and Eric Riddiford are nephews.
