LADIES’ HOCKEY.

NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT SEMI-FINAL. otagD defeat eastern. DANNEVIRKE, August 29. The semi-final game in the Dominion ladies’ hockey championship, between Eastern and Otago to decide who should play off with Canterbury in the final to morrow, was played this afteraeon in fine, overeast weather, on a ground still heavy and slipperv from yesterday’s rain. A stubbornly contested game resulted in a victory for Otago by two goals to nil, a goal being scored in each half. The play was very hard and fast. Otago owed their victory to fine stick work, splendid combination and the great defence of the fullbacks. Eastern played doggedly and never let »P- but were unable to bring their attacks to fruition. Playing in a light breeze in the first spell, Otago were always a shade superior and scored about ten minutes after the start from a. scramble in front of the net, Miss R. Hunt just tapping the ball in, the Eastern goalie having fallen. Except for rare excursions into Otago territory by Eastern, Otago had the better of the remainder of the spell. On reauming. Eastern infused more dash into their play and for some time were very aggressive, but Otago’s defence was impenetrable and withstood repeated ’Onslaughts. The score was unchanged •aril seven minutes of time. Eastern had been attacking determinedly when Misses G. Vidal and Kreaft led a great upfield rush from their own circle for Miss 8. Vidal, on the right wing, to send the ball frohi the sideline right across to Miss R. Hunt on the left flank. She sent in a stinging shot, net high giving the goalie no chance and clinching the match. Miss H. Johnson, the Otago goalie, played brilliantly, •topping several hot shots, and was carried shoulder high off the field.—(P.A.)
