STRUCK BY CENTREPOLE.
FATALITY ON AUCKLAND TRAM. MARRIED WOMAN’S DEATH. AUCKLAND I , June 12. Shocking injuries to the head, which proved fatal an hour later, were received by Mrs. Yvonne Wheadon, 28, when she came into violent contact with a centrepole while standing on the front step of a tramear in Pitt Street this evening. The conductor of the tramear said Mrs. Wheadon and her two children boarded the car at Point Chevalier. When the tram reached the Point Chevalier Theatre the children left the car to go to the pictures. Their mother continued the trip toward the- city. ‘‘ As wer e coming down Pitt Street, the woman, who was in the front half of the tram suddenly left her seat and burned toward the front platform,” said the conductor. “She looked over the chain on the right hand side of the platform and stood for a moment on the step. She was immediately struck violently against the centrepole and knocked from the step on to the roadway. Mrs. Wheadon was suffering grave head injuries and died in the hospital. She is survived by her hustand and two children. Her husband lett home for a camp in the country this morning. The children, who are young, were cared for by friends.—
