ERNEST TORRENCE, VETERAN ACTOR. NEW YORK, May >l5. Ernest Torrence, a veteran screen actor, died early on Monday, aged 54. He claimed the distinction of being the first talking picture actor twenty years ago. (Ernest Torrence was a Scots actor, and with his brother David had considerable success in the films. He made an impression by his work in the silent version of “Tol’able David,” with Richard Barthelmess, and his stage experience aided him when the talkies began to be made. Recent films in which he appeared were “Cuban Love Song,” “Shipmates,” “An Unholy Night,” “Sherlock Holmes” (in which he played Moriarty), and “Sporting Blood. ’ ’)
