On the motion of Mr. W. I. Armstrong it was decided, at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, to again ask the Masterton Borough Council if it would take over the unemployed men classed as B2 at present maintained by the board. Members felt that these men could be 'profitably employed by the council on light street work. The Christchurch Rotary Club made its annual street appeal yesterday to provide Christmas cheer for poor families. The total amount collected in the streets was £1126 Is lid and the total sum in hand, including donations is *£1443 Is lid, with more still to come. Last year the street collections realised £lOOO 15s 6d and the total with, donations was £1400.—(P.A.) 4 ‘The whole of the board’s expenditure is within the estimate and I think we can congratulate ourselves on doing so well for the half-year,” observed the chairman (Mr. W. Fisher) at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Hospital Board. The toys have been distributed to those children who were not entitled to attend the Self Help Christmas Tree function and the money has been expended in making jam for Mr. Bates’s boys* camp at Tauherenikau. Special thanks are due to Messrs Q. H. E. Yates and A. Drew, of the Technical School staff, for their assistance. The little ones to whom the toys were given received them with every indication of delight. At a meeting of the Masterton Choral Society, presided over by Mr. C. C. Marsack, plans for the 1933 season’s programme were discussed. Owing to the great measure of success which attended the “Messiah” concert presented in the Town Hall at the end of last month it was unanimously decided to include Handel’s oratorio in the coming year’s programme. The works decided on and the tentative dates of presentation are as follow: First concert, Stanford’s ‘ 4 Revenge,” and miscellaneous bers, May 13; second concert, Mendelssohn’s “Elijah,” August 2b; third concert, Handel’s “Messiah.” The date of the annual meeting was fixed for Monday, March 6, and on the close of business practice will be commenced on “Revenge.**

Mr. J. Bradbury announces the late arrival of attractive lines suitable for Christmas and New Year gifts. The South Wairarapa County Council elsewhere give notice that their office will be closed from Monday, December 26 to Thursday, January 12, 1933. Mr. Basil Colvin, dental surgeon, Leecroft Chambers, Masterton, elsewhere notifies that his services will be available during the holiday period. In to-day’s Issue will be found the Railway Department f s advertisement giving train arrangements for the New Year holidays. Suitable facilities are provided to Featherston and back on both race days.

A final reminder is given of the big dance to be held in St. Patrick’s Assembly Hall next Monday night. Very complete arrangements have been made to ensure a pleasant evening’s entertainment.

The usual weekly dance will be held at the Galaxy, Carterton, to-night, and in order to cater for all dance lovers there will be some modern dances on the programme. Bus leaves Masterton P.O. at 8 o’clock.

The “Seniqr Store” announces the final distribution of free admission balloons to their Magic Cave by aeroplane to-day at 2 p.m. These have been quite a number of these found by the children and a free visit to Father Christmas has been the result. Remember, to-day, finally at 2 p.m. The Arts and Crafts announce that their premises have never been so packed before with glorious goods. Not only are they well stocked with small, choice, exclusive pieces at moderate prices but the bulk of their regular stocks would cost almost double the price to import at the present time owing to the high tariffs and rates of exchange. The Medici prints in artistic hand-made replica frames, by one of tho world’s best frame-makers, make very choice gifts.
