In an advertisement to-day, all desirous of participating in the grocery parcels distribution of the Masterton Unemployed Self Help Club are requested to hand in their names to the officer in charge not later than Saturday next. John Mains McGill, a married man, -67 years of age, was found dead at his residence in North-East Valley, Dunedin, with his head blown off. The indications suggest that the deceased placed a plug of gelignite in his mouth and detonated it by means of an electric spark.—(P.A.) A farmer of Maharahara, Francis Stanley Rhodes, in November last disposed of a quantity of bottled beer to youthful patrons at dances at Maharahara and Te Rehunga. Complaints by parents led to action by the police, and Rhodes appeared before the magistrate, Mr. J. Miller, at Dannevirke, charged with selling liquor without being licensed to do so. Accused pleaded guilty and admitted having been before the court previously. He was convicted and fined £l5, plus court charges.— (P.A.) Systematic coaching has done much to improve the standard of tennis in England in recent years, according to Mr. C. E. Malfroy, of Wellington, who returned by the Bangitata yesterday morning. Mr. Malfroy was at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, for three years, and performed with considerable success in open tournaments. He gained his tennis “Blue” at Cambridge, and was later captain of the tennis team. Mr. Malfroy will be remaining in New Zealand for some time, and hopes to be a competitor at the New Zealand championships at Wellington in January. “There is not the slightest doubt that for either public or private undertakings the coming year will be the most difficult that any of us ! ts ever experienced,” said the chairman of the Auckland Electric Power Board at the final meeting of the board for the year. “However, we are all looking forward to the future with confidence,” he added. “There have been hard times before. There is not the sEghtest doubt that after passing through the present dark period we will have learned lessons which will help us in future.”

A Press Association message from Dunedin reports the death of Mr. Harold Livingstone Tapley, C.M.G., at the age of 57 years. For some time Mr. Tapley had suffered from heart trouble. He was born at Semaphore, South Australia, in 1875, and arrived in Dunedin in 1893, and established his business of shipping, stevedoring, and insurance agency in 1900. Ho served on various local bodies, being chairman of the Otago Harbour Board in 1919 and 1930 and Mayor of Dunedin for two terms. From 1925 to 1928, Mr. Tapley had a seat in Parliament as member for Dunedin North. Ho only returned last week from a visit to friends and relatives in Adelaide. A number of members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society visited the Solway Home on Tuesday night and entertained the inmates. Those who contributed to the programme were: — Vocal solos, Mr. Herbert and Mr. Gnadinger, Miss Beals and Miss Diggins; recitations, Miss McPhail and Miss Kerins; violin solo, Mr. J. Gallagher; pianoforte solo, Miss M. Dwyer. The accompaniments were played by Miss Mulvey and Mr. Vincent. Mr. McG'regor, Master of the Home, also contributed a solo. A popular item of the evening was the community singing. The inmates were each the recipient of a small gift from the Society, Mr. J. Bradbury making the presentations and expressing the season’s greetings on behalf of the society. A dainty supper was provided by the ladies. Mr. N. Lee thanked the concert party on behalf of the board for the pleasant evening tendered to the inmates.
