LANSDOWNE SCHOOL.

BREAKING-UP CEREMONY. PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES The Lansdowne School breaking-up ceremony was held outside yesterday on the lawn, with a good attendance of parents. The chairmah of the committee (Mr. H. H. Daniell) eulogised the work of the teachers, both in the school and on the playground. In addressing Standard 6 pupils he emphasised the importance of character—especially habits of punctuality, tidiness and obedience. Unless a boy learnt to obey, he could never learn to command. He appealed to parents to play their part in this work. Several carols and class songs were given by the pupils, after which the Std. 6 proficiency and competency certificates and certificates won at the North Wairarapa Schools’ athletic sports were presented by Mrs. Daniell. An outstanding performance was put up by Raymond .Sturgeon, who won the quarter, half and one mile championships. In presenting the prize for dux of the school, won by Maurice Smith, Mr. Daniell stated that although in after life the leaders at school did not always attain the highest place, yet they had “a flying start.” The donation of prizes by the Ladies’ Committee for the most improved boy and girl' in each standard was only one of the activities of the Ladies’ whose work on behalf of the school deserved the highest praise. The pupils to gain prizes were:— Std. 1, Richard Collett, Sibil Gray; Std. 2, Watchman Waaka, Dorothy Ranston; Std.'3, John Smith, Janet Aikman; Std. 4, Geo. Phillips, Jeyee Beattie; Std. 5, Erie Carle, Beatrice Fawcett; Std. 6, Raymond Sturgeon, Thelma Gordon. The attendance certificates will be presented to-day, and the infant school concert and Christmas Tree will be held at 1.30 p.m. An invitation is given to all parents to be present.
