AUSTRALIAN FRUIT.
EMBARGO TO BE IMPOSED. MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. WELLINGTON, December 15. An embargo on Australian fruit and vegetables was announced by the Minister of Customs to-night. It will not apply to fruit and vegetables exported from Australia on or before December 16. In a statement the Hon. W. Downie Stewart says the Government for a long time had unsuccessfully endeavoured to secure the removal by the Commonwealth of the embargo on New Zealand fruit and fruit plants. This embargo was very serious for New Zealand, especially during the present economic financial crisis, when the necessity of obtaining every available market for our products was paramount. Mr. Stewart added that the embargo was not imposed to protect New Zealand fruitgrowers from Australian competition and would be removed any time Australia consented to adjust New Zealand fruit and plants.— (P.A.)
