LOSS TO MASTERTON.

MR. DRUMMOND’S RETIREMENT. FUNCTION AT CENTRAL SCHOOL. A pleasant function took place at the Central School yesterday afternoon, when the staff entertained the headmaster, Mr. B. C. Drummond, at afternoon tea. Mr. H. McFeely, first assistant, who presided, referred to their guest’s many admirable qualities as a headmaster, abd said the staff saw him go with the greatest regret. It was hard to measure the great influence for good he had exercised on the rising generation, for he was in the position to mould the mind, to create enthusiasm, to spread ideas and generally to prepare girls and boys for the infinite business of living. In this, Mr. Drummond had not missed his opportunity and in the speaker’s opinion their guest’s retirement was a great loss to Masterton. He then called on Miss lorns, Senior Mistress of the school, to make a presentation. Miss lorns, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Drummond with an electric reading lamp. Misses Stewart and Armstrong and Mr. J. A. Kennedy added a tribute of praise. Mr. Drummond, in reply, said he felt he always had the goodwill of his staff, and he severed his relations with them and with the school with regret. He wished them and his successor, Mr. Coddington, many school successes in the future. He wished to especially thank Misses Stewart, Peterson and Mr Kennedy for tho keen interest they had displayed in the outdoor activities of the school.

The singing of “For he’s a Jolly Good Fellow” terminated a very happy function.
