ANXIETY IN IRELAND.
OVER DE VALERA’S DISPUTE WITH BRITAIN. CATTLE TRADE ALREADY AFFECTED. ACCEPTANCE OF ARBITRATION HOPED FOB. (Received Monday, 9.20 p.m.) LONDON, July 4. “The Times” Dublin correspondent says there would be immense relief in Ireland if Mr. de Valera’s reply to Mr. J. H. Thomas accepts the principle of Empire arbitration. Already the cattle trade is affected. Shipments have fallen and sales are languishing. Cattle have fallen £2 to £3 a head in a fortnight. The correspondent adds that there is nothing harsh or vindicative In Britain’s action, which is the only method of restoring the balance to the Budget. The Government cannot tamely submit to the taxpayers finding the three millions due from annuities.
