PROFESSIONAL HEAVYWEIGHT CONTEST. CAMPBELL RETAINS TITLE. INVERCARGILL, July 3. In a fifteen round contest for the professional heavyweight boxing championship of New Zealand on Saturday night, Alan Campbell (Timaru), the holder, successfully defended his title against Billy Sullivan (Hastings), the challenger being unable to continue after the twelfth round. Campbell thus won 'on a technical knock‘-out. The fight was a good one and during the early rounds, in which Sullivan shaded Campbell for a couple of rounds, there was every promise of an even contest. Campbell was punching cleaner and harder, however, and gradually wore the challenger down. In the twelfth round, particularly, Campbell administered such punishment to the head and body that Sullivan collapsed a second or two before the gong went and had to be carried to his corner. A doctor examined him end found that Sullivan’s right arm bad given out, an elbow injured in the Cossill fight at Ashburton failing him. Of the twelve rounds, Campbell clearly won nine and proved too good in most departments for Sullivan. The weights were: Campbell, 12st. lOlbs.; Sullivan, I2st. lllbs. The purse was £BO.—(P.A.)
