‘FRANKENSTEIN’ NOW SHOWING. “Frankenstein” proved a popular draw at the Theatre on Saturday, when there were large attendances at matinee and evening performances. This remarkable picture of a man-made monster in living action is to be shown again this evening. Carl Laemmle, Junr., has given the world a tremendous thrill by his courage in producing this picture. Vampires, monsters and criminally inclined gorillas were not supposed to have the power to attract moving picture attendance. But then Universal Anade “Dracula.” It was one of the most popular plays of last year. It was followed by “Frankenstein,” which had an even greater box-office appeal and is described as unique in motion picture production. Associated with Karloff in the notable cast are Colin Clive, Mae Clarke, John Boles, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan and Frederick Kerr. The idea of creating human life is centuries old. But the Frankenstein legend in literature is only one hundred years old. “Frankenstein” was written by Mrs Mary Wollstonecroft Shelley, wife of the wellknown British poet. It was written in a cottage on the shore of Lake Como in a competition with her own husband and with two of his friends. The competition was to produce the most unusual story. In book form, “Frankenstein" has been published in every language and is issued in a tremendous number of editions. Patrons are advised to reserve their seats in good time at Vare’s 'phone 1333.
