SAFE-BLOWER’S ADVENTURE.
ESCAPE FROM PURSUING CONSTABLE. JUMPS THROUGH PLATE GLASS WINDOW. AUCKLAND, June 19. By jumping through a plate glass window at the front of a shop, a thief who was interrupted by a constable as he was attempting to “blow” a safe in the office of the Auckland Meat Company, at the corner of Gtange Road and Dominion Road early this morning, was able to make his escape. The man entered the shop through a back window and inserted a plug of gelignite, complete with fuse and detonator, in the keyhole of the safe, which is in the cash office, within ten feet of the front window. As he was about to fire the charge, a constable on beat duty saw him moving in the darkened shop and went round to the rear. As he was about to enter, he made a slight noise and the thief immediately jumped through the window, gaining a considerable start. The constable pursued him up a dark side street, but lost sight of him. The safe contained a considerable sum of money.—(P.A.)
