APPEAL TO PEOPLE.

HELP NEEDED IN SOLVING UNEMPLOYMENT. FEDERAL PRIME MINISTER’S SPEECH. SPENDING AND INDUSTRIAL REVIVAL. (Received This Day, 0.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, June'l9. Mr. J. A. Lyons, Commonwealth Prime Minister, in a broadcast speech to-night, appealed to the people to assist in the solution of unemployment problems. He stressed the fact that since the Premiers’ Plan had been evolved, unemployment in Australia had not got worse as it had in other countries, though the position had not improved. He pointed out that over sixty million people throughout the world were out of work. A recovery in world prices was needed so that industry might resume on a remunerative footing. Here in Australia the solution must lie in the rehabilitation of primary industries rather than in governmental action, though this naturally helped by the restoration of confidence which the recent elections in the Federal and State arenas had produced. While they must honour their debts, if people would assist by generous spending it w’ould be possible to get idle industries moving and so absorb the unemployed.
