AUXILIARY POLICE.

PROTECTIVE MEASURES IN CHBISTCHUBCH. STATEMENT LABOUR MAYOR. CHRISTCHURCH, May 17. Declaring that he had informed the authorities of his willingness to appeal for assistance from the community in the case of disorder in the city, and had not yet received an answer, the Mayor (Mr. D. G’. Sullivan, M.P.) narrated to the Christchurch City Council the steps he had taken in connection with the establishment of an auxiliary police force. The discussion arose out of a motion moved by Councillor Baker thanking the temporary police for their services. It was not carried, but was referred to the Finance Committee, so that a resolution acceptable to every councillor could be framed. The Mayor said that in his own opinion the motion was the result of letters which had appeared in certain newspapers. One of the objects of that corespondence was to discredit him. When the Mayor asked Councillor Baker to amend the resolution, referring it to the Fininace Committee, Councillor Baker took some time to consider the Mayor’s proposal. “If you are going to play the party game and try to score off the Labour Party, then go ahead” said the Mayor, “but if you want the council to do something to soften down the class feeling and lead to a greater feeling of unity, then adopt my suggestion.” After further discussion the Mayor’s suggestion was accepted by Councillor Baker.—(P.A.)
