BAND CONTEST.

RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S COMPETITIONS. CARTERTON MUNICIPAL ’ PRAISED WELLINGTON, February 21. Despite frequent showers of rain, and fi. sodden ground, the festival ■ of the New Zealand Champion Band Contest was opened with the quickstep competition at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon before an attendance of four thousand. The competition was v divided into two sections, ten bands in the B grade and five in the A grade. St. Kilda Municipal Band won the A grade, the Port Nicholson Silver Band being second ahd the B grade was won by the Nelson Garrison Band, with the Hastings Citizens ’ Band second and the Oamaru Municipal Band third. The B grade contest was held first. The three placed bands were outstanding. The Carterton Municipal Band was the best of the others. There was splendid marching in the A grade. All the bands marched well, although Woolston was rather disappointing. St. Kilda’s performance was a very fine effort. The bands are better trained than in the previous contest, with more care over details. Results:—

Military Display and Quickstep Test March.—A Grade: St. Kilda, musical points, 74; military points, 185; total, 259, 1; Port Nicholson, 76, 1745, 2505, 2; Wellington Tramways, 75, 171$, 2465, 3; Wanganui Garrison, 73, 1721, 2454, 4; Woolston, 71, 1675, 2385, 5. B Grade: Nelson Garrison, 64, 169, 233, 1; Hastings Citizens’, 62, 1704, 2324, 2; Oamaru Municipal, 68, 1635, 2315, 3; Carterton Municipal, 66, 160$, 2265, 4; Masterton Municipal, 63, 1575, 2205, 5; Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 67, 1444, 211$, 6; Miramar Silver, 60, 151, 211, 7; Stratford Municipal, 61, 1484, 209 i, 8; Dunedin City Tramways, 65, 139, 204, 9; Christchurch Municipal, 64, 1384, 2025, 10. At the Town Hall in the evening fourteen bands competed in a hymn contest for the McLeod Cup. Woolston won with an excellent performance. Another good example of hymn playing was given by St. Kilda. Two good exhibitions were made by B grade bands —Hastings Citizens’ and Miramar.
