STATE MINE IDLE.
TOO WET FOR MEN TO WALK TO WORK. DISTANCE OF 18 CHAINS. WELLINGTON, July 14. An extraordinary development occurred at the No. 2 Liverpool State Mine on the West Coast to-day, when the miners refused to attend work on the ground that the weather was too wet for them to walk a distance of 18 chains from the middle break to the mine entrance. Advice of the fact that the mine had been rendered idle for this reason was received by the Mines Department to-day. It was stated that the No. 1 mine was working. Discussing the stoppage this evening, the Minister of Mines said the occurrence, was regrettable, especially in view of the fact that the price of State coal had been reduced in Wellington recently and that the consequent increased demand reacted to the benefit of the miners themselves. By increasing the output from the mine the workers were able to make additional wages and it was to their advantage to keep up the supply, now that there was every prospect of an increased demand.—(P.A.)
