COUNTY AFFAIRS.

MAURICEVILLE COUNTY ANNUAL MEETING. MR. ROBERT JUDD RE-ELECTED CHAIRMAN. The postponed annual meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held on Saturday, all the councillors "'being present. Mr. Robert Judd was unanimously re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. Several councillors remarked that the council was very fortunate in having the services nf a chairman of considerable experience, able and wiling to devote a great deal of time to the county work and who studied the interests of all the ratepayers in every possible way.

RATES REDUCED.

AT ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting was held after the annual meeting. Tho Treasurer reported a debit balance of £477 0s 4d. and accounts amounting lo £482 15s, where passed for payment. The Traffic Inspector reported that proceedings had been taken in a case of* overloading a lorry, for which a fine had been inflicted. A letter from the Health Department requested that the county should not appoint a sanitary inspector without first communicating with the Department. The Wairarapa. Hospital Board forwarded detailed estimates showing the amount of the levy for the current year. The Clerk was instructed to forward to the Public Works Department applications for grants in respect of reading work for the current year. Estimates of expenditure for the current year were considered and were fixed at the lowest possible amount. It was decided to fix a general rate of I l-8d in the £ in the East Riding and of Id in the £ in the West Riding, under the new valuation rolls. This represents a reduction of approximately 27 per cent, in the East Riding and 22 per cent, in the West Riding. Greater reductions would have been possible but for the fact that rates amounting to over £BOO are outstanding. The Overseer reported on the progress of work during the past month and future work was considered and arranged.*
